Bada Shanren (八大山人)

About Artist:

  • Bada Shanren (八大山人), born as Zhu Da (朱耷)
  • 1626- 1705
  • A Chinese Painter of Shuimohua (水墨画), and a calligrapher
  • His paintings feature sharp brush strokes which are attributed to the sideways manner by which he held his brush.

Fish and Rock (1699)

This art is one of the impressionistic Chinese paintings from Badu. There is something fresh, shocking and balanced about virtually all his paintings.

Elements of Design

  • Line. As we see from the painting, there are six of the fish are shown, but the seventh appears as if seen from it, leaving the viewer disoriented, the absence of a horizon line adds to the unsettling effect.
Shape. Bada juxtapose large and small, solid and void, heavy and light, creating a tension between flat shapes and three- dimensional volumes that heightens the disturbing quality.

  • Color. The art might showed only two colors, which are black and white. But there are tone and shades for the black color to show the distance. It created a different feeling to every different people.
  • Type. Artwork using calligraphy line as the font.

Principles of Design
  • Balance     : Two stones at both left and right side. (The left hand stone is bigger with light tone shape, while the right handed stone is slightly smaller than left handed stone but with dark tone shape).
  • Repetition  : when variation is introduced, the shapes of fished, although similar, are much more interesting to look at. they can no longer be absorbed properly with a single glance.
  • Hierarchy   : The artwork flows in a "cascade" from the top- right to the bottom left.
  • Scale          : The big rock on the left hand side against the smaller rock on the right bottom rock create a sense of isolation.
